Kay's
House
Kay began her Buddhist practice after Nikken's first excommunication of the SGI. Because Nikken refused to allow new SGI members to receive the Gohonzon, she chanted for more than a year to an empty altar. I felt for her. I was also impressed by her sincerity. After Reverend Narita made the Nichikan Gohonzon available to SGI members, Kay was the first person in our district to receive one. I was curious to see if it looked like the old Nichikan Gohonzon that I had seen in the home of a pioneer member. (Local temples often issued the Nichikan Gohonzon to members in the early days of the Soka Gakkai.) My friend Maggie and I carefully unrolled the Gohonzon and placed it in Kay's altar. After Gongyo both Kay and Maggie said what I was thinking: "What a beautiful Gohonzon!" At that time Kay lived in a large house with her cat. The man that she was dating (Stan) lived 45 minutes from her house. She wanted to share her house with him or have him share his house with her. Two months after enshrining her Nichikan Gohonzon, they moved in together. Maggie and I re-enshrined Kay's Gohonzon in her new house. Six months later they were married. I saw them recently on the
subway. They sat together. They were talking and holding hands.
