The Blue Fuhrer and the Glowing Gohonzon

The Blue Fuhrer's mom grew a kind of morning glory in the back yard. The Blue Fuhrer found out that this kind of morning glory seed had a small quantity of LSD in each seed.

He would tell me how many seeds he had eaten, as I drove him to the Buddhist discussion meetings.

The first time we tried to teach him slow Gongyo, he made sounds like earthquakes, volcanoes, and other mighty forces, in rhythm with the sounds of Gongyo. When he did this, I remembered the story about Mr. Makiguchi in a shaky stilt house doing Gongyo when an earthquake hit. Many people jumped out the window. Makiguchi finished Gongyo with composure, and said, "If you are shaken by a mundane earthquake, how will you face the four powerful enemies that will surely emerge as we propagate the Mystic Law?"

One night, I brought the Blue Fuhrer to a large introductory meeting (there were three to four hundred people there).

During the question and answer, he raised his hand and asked: "Why does my Gohonzon sometimes seem to glow?"

The Japanese person who was answering questions said: "Glow? I think you must be space-out. I have heard of the Gohonzon shrinking but never growing."

The Blue Fuhrer tried to explain: "No, I mean it seems to get brighter when I chant."

The Japanese leader said, "Blighter?!!! I still think you are space-out."

All people train us to be better people. I did not understand how the Blue Fuhrer trained me, until I became a father.

Now I do Gongyo even though there are earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanoes all around me.

These are the sounds of my children being alive.

My Gohonzon glows.
