Tony's Wounds
"The Maka Shikan says, 'Since the Lotus Sutra can cure [illness], it is also called myo or mystic.' Miao-lo said, 'Because it can cure that which is very difficult to cure, it is called myo or mystic.'"
(From the Gosho "Curing Karmic Illness")
Tony had it all — the perfect woman, job, friends, house, lifestyle. He was self-actualized.

One night that changed. As he was leaving a nightclub with his fiancée, a car careened into them, killing his fiancée and leaving him for dead, a few steps from the curb.

When he regained consciousness, the life that he knew was over. He hurt all over. He could not think straight. His legs and one arm were in traction. He could barely move. When he found out what happened he was filled with hatred.

When his friends visited him in the hospital they fed his hate and plotted revenge together. "We're going to get the person who did this to you!" they vowed.

His sister and her husband would visit and insist that they chant together. He did it to please his sister (and it did feel good). He even chanted when she was not there, like when he was in pain, waiting for the morphine to kick in.

But his wounds were not responding to treatment. He was not healing.

One night after a long chant with his sister and her husband, his brother-in-law looked at him very sincerely and said: "Tony, I hate to have to tell you this, but your wounds are not healing. They are not healing because of your hatred for the person that crippled you. I can't blame you for your hatred, but if you ever hope to heal yourself, you have to heal the wound of your hatred. The only way that I know that you can do this is to chant for the happiness of that hit-and-run driver."

Tony hated his brother-in-law for his advice. After they left, he found himself in pain again, so he chanted, and while he chanted he thought about what his brother-in-law told him. He was repulsed by the idea, but then he thought, "How could it hurt?" And he chanted for the absolute happiness of the hit-and-run driver.

He began to heal.
